Age of Mythology is an RTS (real-time strategy) game similar to age of empires. It was developed by Ensemble studios and released by Microsoft. Age of Mythology, unlike the Age of Empires series, incorporates Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology unto the game. The campaign follows an Atlantean (as in from Atlantis, the mythical island which sank to the bottom of the ocean) admiral, Arkantos, on his quest to defeat Gargarensis, a cyclops who wants to destroy Atlantis. The campaign starts with Arkantos in Atlantis. The first mission is to defend Atlantis against a group of pirates, called the black sails, led by a minotaur (half-man, half-bull) named Kamos.

Later, Arkantos is given the task of assisting Agamemnon in the Trojan War. Arkantos fights alongside Ajax and Odysseus and eventually they build the Trojan Horse and win the war. Ajax tells Arkantos to go to Loklos, home of the centaur (half-man, half-horse), Chiron, to repair his ships. They arrive and find out that the port has been raided. Chiron takes them north and they find prisoners being forced by Gargarensis to dig up an entrance to the Underworld. Gargarensis succeeds in uncovering the gate to the Underworld and tries to  break it down with a ram, but Arkantos, Ajax, and Chiron, along with their armies, destroy the ram. Arkantos and his men resurface in Egypt and assist a Nubian mercenary, Amanra, against some bandits under command of the assassin Kemsyt. She tells Arkantos that the Egyptian god, Osiris has been killed by another god, Set, who aids Gargarensis. One night, Arkantos has a dream in which Athena reveals to him that Gargarensis's true motive is to free Kronos, the Titan lord of time in the hopes that he will be granted immortality as a reward. Arkantos and his allies succeed in reviving Osiris and he destroys Gargarensis's army.

Then, on the way north, Arkantos and his allies find Odysseus's wrecked ship on Circe's Island. They also find that all of Odysseus's men have been turned to pigs. They fight Circe and change the men back. When they reach the north, they are given directions to the underworld by two dwarfs named Brokk and Eitri in exchange for defending their forges from giants. They reach the Underworld and with the help of Valkyrie Reginleif they locate Gargarensis at the Tartarus gate. They are pursued by fire giants until Chiron sacrifices himself to save them. They also run into Brokk and Eitri again and find that they have been rebuilding Thor's hammer again. After it is complete, it seals the Tartarus gate just as Kronos is coming out. They come back to the surface and kill Gargarensis (or so they believe) and sail back to Atlantis. There they find they have been deceived by Loki and the head is actually Kemsyt's. Gargarensis is alive and is trying to open the last gate to Tartarus. Arkantos is blessed by Zeus and becomes a powerful demi-god who defeats a living Poseidon statue and saves Atlantis. Later, Athena rewards Arkantos by making him a god.
